As of the 2025-26 academic year, the total number of MBBS seats in India stands at approximately 1,26,600. This figure is after the National Medical Commission (NMC) added 9,075 new seats and removed 456 seats due to ongoing court cases. These seats are distributed across various states and medical colleges, including government, private, AIIMS, and deemed universities. The expansions reflect efforts to meet the growing demand for medical education and professionals in the country.

Here are some additional details about the MBBS seat landscape in India:

- About 780 to 809 medical colleges are offering these seats nationwide.

- The MBBS seats are categorized mainly into government and private college seats, roughly balanced in number.

- AIIMS institutes collectively have around 2,044 MBBS seats.

- Government colleges typically have about 55,000 seats, while private colleges have a similar number.

- Seat allocation happens through NEET UG entrance exams, with 15% seats reserved under All India Quota and 85% under state quotas.

- The seat matrix is annually updated by the NMC to reflect new approvals and withdrawals.

This comprehensive expansion aims to improve access to medical education across India for aspiring doctors.
